About This Game

Tetris Forever NSP ROM is an action-puzzle game that lets you compete with friends in classic multiplayer games like Tetris Battle Gaiden, create spectacular explosions to obliterate your opponents in Super Bombliss, and enjoy the original Electronika 60 computer version of Tetris.

How many times do you think we’ll use the word “Tetris” in a single review? Get ready, because we’ll use it a lot: Tetris Forever contains 18 games based on the original 1985 game. Or rather, we can add “tetromino” for variety. Anyway, Tetris. Thanks to its accessibility and enduring popularity, it’s often considered one of the best games of all time. However, it’s no surprise that you might not be familiar with the game’s history, its release, and its significant impact on the video game industry. Tetris Forever is here to shed light on this iconic game. The third volume of Digital Eclipse’s “Gold Master” series explores the origins of one of the gaming world’s most beloved series.

If you’ve read my books “The Making of Karateka” and “Llamasoft: The Story of Jeff Minter,” you already know what to expect from this Gold Master edition. Also, as mentioned, *Tetris Forever* includes 18 games, from a remake of the original Tetris Electronica 60* to *Tetris Time Warp*, a new version of the classic game created specifically for this Digital Eclipse collection that immerses you in the history of the series. While the included games represent only a small fraction of the full Tetris catalog, the variety of time periods more than compensates for this with numerous references to major games, making this edition an invaluable addition.

Here’s just one example: In 1993, the First Lady of the United States, Hillary Clinton, plays Tetris on a Game Boy on a plane.

The examples are countless, and it’s heartening to see Pajitnov and Rogers’ passion for the series. Regarding playable versions, it’s understandable why Tetris Forever overlooked its post-2000s releases, given that companies like Ubisoft, Sega, THQ, and EA started paying attention to the series during this period. Instead, the game focuses on some lesser-known direct sequels and a few prequels to the main game. For example, it’s worth noting that Digital Eclipse recreated Pajitnov’s original Tetris Electronika 60 game in Russian and English versions, including every detail, such as the green and white color scheme and the impressive frame inspired by Electronika 60.

Tetris Forever Review: The Origins and Essence of a Timeless Game

Also, one of the collection’s highlights is the Tetris Time Warp mode. It offers the opportunity to try different versions of classic Tetris, all with modified graphics. The concept is simple: you move the pieces along a line as usual, but every now and then a unique Tetris piece appears. After completing a level, you’re temporarily teleported to a different Tetris game. For example, you might find yourself in the “1989 Edition,” which is actually the Game Boy version without the official logo, and you have to remove the double line within seconds.
