Now, let’s get to the point (which is hardly a surprise): Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door for Nintendo Switch is a fantastic turn-based RPG that remains compelling, fun, and engaging even after twenty years. Nintendo hasn’t changed a thing about this 2023 Super Mario RPG. It’s the game you know and love, but with a more attractive look, improved sound, and several significant gameplay improvements.

However, while Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door rivals the greatest RPGs of the modern console era, Super Mario RPG was a revival of a classic for a new generation. Given Paper Mario’s unique, twenty-year history, it’s understandable that new players are wondering what to expect from The Thousand-Year Door. In short, after The Thousand-Year Door, Paper Mario disappeared along with its essence.

A visually vibrant reboot of a timeless classic.

The Switch version largely replicates the original gameplay. However, several added features have a significant impact, especially on time management. If you played the original game, you’ll undoubtedly remember the long, tedious runs across fields in General White’s absurd mission. This problem, and many others, has been solved thanks to the new teleportation chamber located beneath the Rogport Center.

Each level ends with the appearance of a new teleportation tube that instantly transports you back to the center of the level. Not only does teleportation solve General White’s infamous dilemma, it also offers a great way to quickly return to previously visited areas, joining a group of new companions with unique abilities. Retrieving important items has always been necessary, but now the process is much more efficient and enjoyable.
