About This Game

Demon Slayer -Kimetsu no Yaiba- The Hinokami Chronicles NSP ROM is an action-adventure fighting game that offers a fresh perspective to arena fighting with its online multiplayer mode and immersive story.

Combining fighting games with story modes is often a challenging task. Integrating them effectively is particularly difficult, perhaps because it’s hard to tell a compelling story when the core interaction is limited to two characters fighting each other. Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba – The Hinokami Chronicles is no exception; its single-player mode struggles to find the right balance between a great story and an engaging gameplay experience. Fortunately, the arena battles are dynamic and exciting, offering a good balance between simplicity and depth, especially in multiplayer mode.

Game Plot

The Hinokami Chronicles follows the same plot as the manga and anime it’s based on, from the beginning to the end of the “Infinity Train” episode. If you’re unfamiliar with the Demon Slayer series, the game tells the story of Tanjiro and Nezuko Kamado after demons kill their family and transform Nezuko into a demon. The game follows the characters’ quest for revenge and Nezuko’s determination to regain her humanity. Much of the story is told through beautiful cinematic cutscenes, voiced in English and Japanese by the anime’s original voice actors. You don’t need prior knowledge of the Demon Slayer series to understand the characters, their story, and the gameplay.

Intuitive Combat Controls System

Each normal attack has a dedicated button, and each special move has a different button. By moving the joystick in a specific direction and pressing one of these buttons, you can perform various special moves or three unique combos: one lifts the opponent into the air, another pins them to the ground, and the third knocks them down.

Each fighter can also throw, dodge, perform finishing moves, use powerful attacks, and activate two special bonuses: Empowerment and Dash. Boost enhances attacks and adds an extra combo option, while Dash provides the character with unlimited energy for a short time. These moves strike a good balance, offering interesting counter-attack options without making Hinokami Chronicles too difficult to grasp initially.

The idea is appealing in theory, but incredibly boring in practice. Characters move incredibly slowly, and there’s no way to run faster, which is incredibly frustrating, especially when you need to turn back to avoid a dead end or retrieve an item. Sometimes you have to walk even slower to allow characters to speak along the way, making those sections even more tedious.
