About This Game

DRAGON BALL: Sparking! ZERO NSP ROM is a fighting game that takes the gameplay of the legendary Budokai Tenkaichi series to new heights. Become a Super Saiyan and discover the incredible, unlimited power of Dragon Ball battles!

As you would expect from a Dragon Ball game, Spark! Zero features a number of impressive special attacks that you will recognize from the series. When you have enough energy, you can unleash one of these attacks by simultaneously pressing a trigger and action button, charging up a devastating Kamehameha, or performing a spectacular combo. Special attacks require full energy and almost always use up several health bars. They also activate flashing light effects and amusing expressions that last for about 30 seconds.

Using all of these attacks is incredibly satisfying, but to do so, you need to charge up your energy. This involves standing still and shouting, enveloped in a powerful and familiar aura. As you can imagine, this is no easy feat in such a fast-paced fighting game. Since both players will want to use their powers, tension and awkward moments are inevitable as they focus their energy before the fight. Dragon Ball: Spark! ZERO offers multiple possibilities: a story mode that covers almost every aspect of the series, from its origins to the present day, and online battles.

Unleash the Power of Over 180 Iconic Dragon Ball Fighters!

Starting with the campaign is undoubtedly the most logical option and, as always in Dragon Ball games, offers a very enjoyable nostalgic journey. Multiple campaigns allow you to play as different characters, starting with Goku. As you progress, you will unlock campaigns for villains such as Vegeta, Piccolo, Gohan, and even Frieza. The greatest strength of this mode lies in its alternative narrative branches, which are unlocked by meeting certain conditions. These branches hold interesting surprises and offer a stimulating challenge.

The world of video games and the way we play them have evolved considerably since Budokai Tenkaichi, the last major installment in the Dragon Ball Z series. Dragon Ball: Spark! ZERO is the first direct sequel since the PlayStation 2 era. Its design and presentation give it a unique charm, unmatched by other current fighting games. More difficult and frustrating than Vegeta Armor, it remains faithful to the story despite its imbalance. Its menus are labyrinthine, and the tutorial hints are few and far between.

Participate in Various Tournaments and Challenges!

Although we have played many famous Dragon Ball games such as FighterZ, Xenoverse 2, and Kakarot, Dragon Ball: Spark! ZERO has become the most popular title in the series since its release. I was quite surprised that Spike Chunsoft made this game, especially since it’s so different from the Danganronpa-style games that the studio has accustomed us to. With all the hype and an unexpected developer at the helm of Dragon Ball: Sparking! Zero, will this be another disappointment?

I have to start this review by listing the sheer amount of content on offer right out of the gate. You’ll have access to over 180 characters, including all of the transformations and unique moves each character has to offer as they appear in the story chapters. The game was expected to be a return to the roots of the series, a fast-paced arena fighting game with stunning twists, and it delivers on that in full. The classic formula is mixed with modern additions: 4K graphics and smooth transitions between cutscenes and battles. Did I mention the impressive number of playable characters? The story mode, organized into chapters, once again starts with Reddit.
