About This Game
Disney Illusion Island NSP ROM is an action platformer where you choose your favorite character and unlock special abilities by performing aerial acrobatics, solving fun puzzles, and battling epic bosses. Join Mickey Mouse and his friends as they explore the mysterious island of Moon and rescue three mystical books to save the world from destruction!
Among Disney’s most memorable games are Castle of Illusion and World of Illusion for the Mega Drive/Genesis. In an era when most Disney games (with a few exceptions like Mickey Mouse Cupid and Fantasia) were of high quality, these two games stood out for their solid gameplay and fun mechanics, embodying the fantasy and magic characteristic of Disney. The developers of Disney Illusion Island, an action platformer inspired by cartoons, explained that they chose the word “Illusion” for the title because it evokes a tradition of high-quality adventures.
A New Adventure for Mickey and His Friends
The story is simple but well-told: key events are depicted through long animated sequences, while gameplay-focused information is usually conveyed through dialogue. Perhaps the main flaw of the narrative lies in its sometimes overly inventive experiments. The story evokes the plot of a cartoon episode, which is what makes it so effective. Several animated sequences, which are easily mistaken for clips from “The Wonderful World of Mickey Mouse”, play a major role in this effect. Each scene is narrated by voice, offering the perfect balance of action, humor, and dynamics, without the dialogue being too long.
You see enough to understand a new plot twist or the group’s next destination, and then you regain control to continue the quest. The four main characters are as engaging and well-developed as you’d expect, and their interactions during the brief dialogues with the other non-playable characters are flawlessly executed. For example, Donald Duck constantly acts like a grumpy, easily manipulated sailor, while Goofy, unsurprisingly, is distracted and only thinks about food.
Explore a Mysterious Island
While most of Illusion Island is focused on platforming, Dlala Studios has managed to include just the right amount of character interaction to keep it from becoming monotonous. As for the gameplay, unlike its retro predecessors, Illusion Island has a Metroidvania-style structure. The levels flow seamlessly, checkpoints are generously spaced, and after choosing your character, you’ll find yourself in a vast, interconnected map filled with collectibles, side paths, and countless areas that require specific abilities that you’ll have to return to later.
While the power-ups aren’t particularly innovative (classics like double jump and ground attack), we were pleasantly surprised by how the level design makes use of their emerging weapons. Exploring the early areas will reveal more complex sections that require advanced techniques. The game’s difficulty never feels insurmountable and provides a sense of constant progression. Controlling each of the whimsical characters in Disney Illusion Island Quartet is a real joy, thanks to its simple and precise controls and the ease of gameplay that allows for quick adjustments on the fly.
In Short
If you’re a Disney fan, especially if you love Mickey Mouse and his friends, this game is for you, no matter your age. Its more casual approach allows you to relax between sessions, even after completing a Souls game or a challenging NES title. This game is perfect for a relaxing break. And if you have a child or teenager looking for a more accessible experience, this is perfect!
