About This Game

Dragon Quest VII Reimagined NSP ROM is a beautifully crafted turn-based strategy RPG, far more accessible to new players than the 2016 3DS remaster. However, it may disappoint fans of previous installments. Minor tweaks, such as highlighting enemy weaknesses or immunities during battles, can make the game less challenging. Experienced RPG players might therefore prefer a higher difficulty level and avoid auto-battle. I haven’t defeated a Dragon Quest final boss on my first try in a long time, but that’s exactly what happened to me in Reimagined, despite my practice. The result was more disappointment than victory. While this updated version isn’t a disaster, it doesn’t reach the same level of satisfaction as the 2D HD games or Dragon Quest XI. So, prepare yourself for a very different experience.

One of the conclusions of my analysis of Dragon Quest VII Reimagined is that, despite all the improvements, the game is best enjoyed in short bursts. Due to its repetitive and cyclical gameplay, extended sessions reveal the superficiality of the recreated world. The characters you encounter are only interesting for a few moments, and the brevity of their interactions makes them difficult to remember. You might think I’m criticizing certain traditional RPG elements and mechanics, but the structure of Dragon Quest VII seems to highlight the inherent weaknesses of these very elements.

The visual style is unusual. Instead of adopting the HD-2D style of the Erdrick trilogy remakes, the development team created a distinctive, hand-drawn aesthetic using detailed, scanned 3D models from within the game.

Explore islands, solve puzzles, and relive the present by strengthening your long-standing friendships:

The dual-class system adds significant strategic depth, allowing players to combine skills from different professions and create harmonious combinations reminiscent of the customization options in games like Final Fantasy XII: The Zodiac Age. The profession progression system uses earned points that function like experience, and equipped professions gain levels during battles. The remastered version adopts the 3DS approach, where characters can only use the skills of their current profession. Each profession has its own unique advantages: special abilities that activate under specific combat conditions, functioning as finishing moves, with effects ranging from powerful attacks to healing or skill boosts.

The user interface clearly displays the requirements for unlocking new professions, allowing players to strategically choose their preferred profession combinations. For fans of class-based games, these improvements significantly deepen character customization. The Magic Fragment system has always been a cornerstone of teamwork; players collect and combine artifacts, much like Lego bricks, to unlock new areas. While innovative, this mechanic could sometimes be frustrating in previous versions, as finding clues could be challenging. The 3DS version addressed this issue by adding a search bar at the bottom of the screen and further improving the search process by directly displaying clues on the mini-map.
