About This Game

SHINOBI: Art of Vengeance NSP ROM is a 2D action platformer game very similar to other titles in the series, but with a few modern touches. It’s much less linear and features vast levels where you define your next objective using a map. Some areas are blocked by doors; you must then find levers or buttons to open them and progress. Other areas become accessible after acquiring special abilities, which we’ll discuss later. You can then return to the previous level to discover some of its secrets. Each level offers numerous items to strengthen your ninja.

By dealing damage to enemies, you fill a gauge that allows you to use magical attacks. I started with a fire attack, and by simultaneously pressing the trigger and the corresponding button, you can unleash a series of devastating attacks. The early levels feature obstacles that can only be overcome with later upgrades. The classic Metroidvania-style gameplay is the main reason for replaying the combat and is highly appreciated by fans of the genre. Joe gains superhuman movement abilities when his Fury gauge is full. Pressing any button activates a ninjutsu technique.

To say that Shinobi: Art of Vengeance is a simple platformer is an understatement; it’s much more than just button-mashing. From the very first beta phases, Joe demonstrated spectacular finishing moves that annihilated enemies. My favorite? The Shinobi Execution. When an enemy takes enough damage, they are marked with a symbol. As soon as it appears, you simply run towards them and instantly eliminate them with your sword. So, if you mark several enemies with this symbol, Joe will furiously leap across the screen.

The more eliminations you chain together, the greater the reward. Joe can also use a form of magic called ninjutsu. Once a small gauge is filled by eliminating enemies, you can unleash a magic attack. In my test version, I used a short fireball attack and a water attack that knocked enemies back. The true finishing move was the ninjutsu, a powerful strike that activates when Joe accumulates enough fury from taking damage and clears the entire screen. However, despite my admiration for the graphics, I was completely captivated by the combat system. It was incredibly fluid and dynamic, yet simple and accessible to everyone.

It Utilizes Countless Attack Sequences With Unique Combat Techniques:

You have access to light and heavy attacks, ninjutsu, long-range kunai, signature finishing moves, as well as classic dodges and jumps to escape combat. At first glance, it might seem like a simple series of random button presses, but the importance of strategy quickly becomes apparent when combining elemental ninjutsu attacks with precise dodges. After mastering the game’s mechanics, I felt like a true ninja, leaping and attacking. Combining different attacks to surprise enemies and finish them off with a spectacular blow was incredibly satisfying, and I particularly appreciated that the game encouraged fighting multiple enemies simultaneously.
