About This Game

The first true HUNTER×HUNTER NEN×IMPACT NSP ROM fighting game is finally here! 3-on-3 team combat with Nen. Form teams of characters and face off in 3-on-3 duels. While many were skeptical about Nen x Impact’s limited budget, I was excited by the prospect of a great fighting game that is a charming introduction to this cult classic series. I was partly right, as Hunter x Hunter: Nen x Impact is undoubtedly a great fighting game, but it suffers from its limited budget and an execution that doesn’t do the original work justice. If, like me, you approach Hunter x Hunter: Nen x Impact with little knowledge of the anime or manga,

you’ll probably jump straight into the campaign to understand the story. While the story mode loosely follows the events from the “Hunter’s Trial” episode to the “Chimera Ants” episode (the first five episodes, almost the first 140 episodes of the surprisingly long anime), you’ll be disappointed if you’re hoping to learn more than the basics. Each episode begins with a few generic images from the anime and a short text, followed by a few lines of dialogue before the fight begins. The whole thing is over in a matter of minutes. The story is not only simple, but also because many details have been left out of each episode.

Relive Iconic Moments From Hunter X Hunter

New players may not know who these characters are or what their motivations are. For example, I started playing Nen x Impact thinking that Killua was a tough guy eager to learn, but as is often the case in the shonen genre, I discovered that he was powerful, but rather ordinary. It was only after consulting the fan wiki that I learned that he was actually a ruthless assassin raised by other assassins. Nen x Impact also avoids a lot of the deeper aspects, especially in the Chimera Ant episode, which only has three fights and focuses mainly on the conflict between Netero and Meruem.

For those interested in the gameplay mechanics only: My main complaint about the control system is the lack of movement commands and the introduction of special moves that are performed with a simple button press. For those unfamiliar with the system, it’s the classic special move system found in fighting games. From Ryu’s forward quarter circle motion to Shoryuken’s Z-Move (also known as DP-Move) to launch fireballs. Street Fighter 6 introduced Modern Controls (among other changes), giving players a convenient control option with special moves at the press of a button, prompting many games to adopt a similar system.

Create Your Ultimate Synergistic Team

Both games are 3v3 fighting games that focus on coordinating with teammates (or switching positions altogether) in a 2.5D environment. If you’ve played MvC3, you might also wonder if Hunter × Hunter: Nen × Impact uses the same graphics engine. But that’s not a major issue. The controls are precise, the gameplay is fluid, and the game faithfully reproduces the anime’s aesthetic. While combos and special moves are simplified, the basics are solid.

However, the game is sorely lacking in content. In short, its high price is unjustified. As for the number of playable characters, there are only 16. Of course, this number is higher than in Granblue Fantasy: Versus, but the latter makes up for this deficiency with a rich and complete single-player campaign.
